Research Images for "Snakeheads" the Movie.... | |
What do you do when you need somebody to take research shots of Hong Kong? Easy....you send someone that's already been! Having already travelled extensively in both Hong Kong AND mainland China, we decided to send Chris Boyd back to South-East Asia to begin the Research and Development stage of "Snakeheads" the Movie.... *PLEASE NOTE* Some of these pictures aren't fantastic reproductions, but that's because a lot of the time, I was taking pictures in areas that, to put it mildly, weren't too happy about Westerners taking shots of an issue that isn't even supposed to be a problem anymore, so I had to take the snaps when I could, and hope that nobody confiscated my camera.... |

Dragon Arch, Foshan (2000) On your right is a picture of an arch that is part of a massive cultural centre in Foshan, which was invaluable with regard to compiling general sociological and community information.... |

The Streets of Foshan (2000) On the streets of Foshan, I was (un?)fortunate enough to make contact with actual Traid members, who passed on information about the activities of human-cargo smuggling.... |
Luck Tree (2000) Don't quite understand ALL the details, but....if you buy an orange, tie it to the message of your choice and hang it from the tree, your wish comes true. Or something. |

Islands within islands (2000) These islands are supposedly home to a number of notorious Triad organisations, which is rather worrying seeing as you pass these islands on a theme-park cable car.... C'mon kiddies, wave to the nice man with the gun..(!) |
Victoria Peak (2000) Wow, Deja-Vu....upon my return to Hong Kong, I again ventured up Victoria Peak, because away from the celebrity home tour rides and fun-parks, are a number of tower blocks that make the Bronx look like Disneyland....needless to say, I gleaned some useful information here, too.... |

GuangDong City (2000) Seperated by a bridge, one half of the city is wealthy, prosperous, full of energy and going places. The other......isn't. So, guess which part I had to stay in to do my research. This pic actually turned out quite well, considering that taking a photo on a bridge is an offence (they class bridges as military targets).... |
Victoria Peak Bay (2000) A well known cargo-run for Triads all over China.... |

Hong Kong Harbour (2000) The place where it all happens (usually). I had a nightmare trying to take this picture, the dock security was all over me, and that's even though I was pretending to be a tourist taking some snaps.... |
A boat shipping containers to the West....(2000) ....or is it? this boat, taking a river through to Shanghai, probably IS just carrying haulage to be shipped to America. But you never can tell.... |

Foshan...(2000) For once, a lighthearted shot of Foshan, taking in the interior of the Cultural Centre.... |
Big Business (2000) More often than not, the Triads involved in human cargo smuggling have other interests, such as investments in numerous corporate companies, not forgetting drugs and weapons shipment.... |

Kwang Tung Province (2000) Taken at night with a fancy infra-red camera (didn't want to attract any attention!), this pic shows the kind of rural area that these refugees are usually trying to escape from.... |
Another image of Rural China (2000) One final, daytime shot of the kinds of areas that are usually abandoned, thanks to the promise of a better life overseas.... |
